DOLLAR STORE – A GROUP SHOW

Kunsthalle Chicago is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by many compelling new and established artists working in the Chicago area. This will mark the inaugural exhibition of Kunsthalle Chicago, a new roving arts space as organized by curator Jean Kang.

On April 19th, 2008, Kunsthalle Chicago will formally open its doors at the site of an old "Dollar Store." On view until April 27th are works by artists Andrea Slavik, Lisa Kutsukake, Michael Milano, Erin Washington, Madeleine Bailey, Yvette Marie Dostatni, Esteban Schimpf, Samia Mirza, Michael Hunter, Marly Freeman, Alexander Ferrando, Indy Wood, Melody Saraniti, Lucia Fabio, Robert Mueller, Yogi Proctor, Alice Tippit, Leila Cartier, and Brookhart Jonquil as well as performances by kate and paul, Naufús Figueroa, Irene Loughlin, Justin Cabrillos and Emily Siefken.

Enjoy works by Lisa Kutsukake, whose concrete covered tulips can be seen from through the window; as well as work by Andrea Slavik, whose video installation explores the marketing of middle class lifestyles through the selling of model homes. Madeleine Bailey will broadcast signals from the storefront in morse code; and Erin Washington's wax-resin apples will slowly deteriorate over the course of the show.

As well, are Samia Mirza's papier mache sculptures alongside works by Esteban Schimpf and Lucia Fabio's minimally rendered large-and-small scale bunnies.

A closing reception will be held on April 26th following the 8 pm performance of Emily Siefken, a military veteran of two wars in the Middle East. In a past performance, she has dressed in her military uniform and acted out the ritual of grieving she witnessed by the people of Afghanistan.
